What an eventful weekend for Laser Tools Racing!
The team were ready for the weekend and had our car very well prepared. Aiden Moffat is really starting to get into the groove with his new (for 2016) race engineer Federico Turrata, both now working very well together. On the Saturday, with track conditions warm and dry it didn’t take Aiden very long to get on pace. This was rewarded in the Free Practice 2session when he put in a blistering lap time of 1:17.045 which put him in a solid third place for that session. The other Mercedes of Adam Morgan had not fared so well after a massive crash due to a tyre blowout. The team at WIXRacing did very well to repair the car and get it ready for the qualifying session.
Heading in to qualifying we were confident of doing well, however achieving the front row was a bit of a surprise! Initially I was in P4 and as the session went on I dropped a few places and ended up P10 which was still a good result for us. Going for my second run, I knew my lap time was quicker but expected P7/8, so I was surprised with P2! But still a little gutted when I found out how close we were to pole position — just three-hundredths of a second off with a lap time of 1:16.194.
In Race 1, I got an average start them hit into a slide at turn three, which bent the rear suspension and took life out of the tyres trying to correct the slide. A couple laps later I got hit again which bent the steering so the tyres were constantly scrubbing across the surface. However we still managed to fight back to P2 and when I got there, I was trying to manage the position rather than push hard. Unfortunately the damage worked the tyres hard and that led to a puncture which resulted in us going off when we were sitting 2nd.
In Race 2, we were aiming to climb a lot of places but got another hit on lap one, again bending the rear suspension and resulting in a lot of under steer through fast right hand corners and making the tyres work harder. We only managed to get to 16th as we struggled with the car, and I had also missed the start as I couldn’t see the 5 second board come out.
Race 3 started well, I got a great start and quickly went up to P13. However, crossing the line at the end of lap 1 I got hit which unbelievably gave me a puncture on the right rear. After pitting, I had great pace and got the fastest lap of the race, which was the fastest racing lap of the weekend.
Although the weekend’s results were hugely frustrating and disappointing, it actually has given me even more confidence as it has shown how good a car we have, how great the Laser Tools Racing bunch are, and that I am capable of being up at the front. So we will carry this momentum into the next race, and hopefully give something to show in the races this time.
